Opened in 1931, Clifton's was one of the first (and longest surviving) cafeterias in the world. Founder Clifford Clinton carried out his ethos that no one should go hungry, and offered meals to be paid at the diners' discretion. The design of the restaurants included exotic decor and facades that were highly theatrical, including multi story fake redwood trees, stuffed lions, neon
